Domenico, a chronically unemployed loser, decides to change his destiny by robbing a bank and escaping north to nearby Switzerland. Amazingly, he's successful, but in his usual inept fashion is forced to take a hostage -Tomasso, a smooth-talking bankrupt businessman.

Tomasso quickly takes control, convincing poor Domenico they'd better off changing directions and going south. Along the way, he draws the two of them into his own world of a failed resort spa for pets, a failed marriage and a deteriorating relationship with a policeman. As the pair try to escape from the law and life, their past continues to follow them.
