Destiny (Dakan)
Mohamed Camara, director.
West Africa, 1997, 35mm, 87 min.
French and Madikan with English subtitles.

From the opening sequence of two men passionately kissing in a car, it is clear that we are witnessing something very new in African cinema.. Director Camara locates the relationship between two young gay men, Manga and Sory, firmly in the context of Guinean society, where the pressure to marry, produce children and realize the expectations of the family are paramount. Recalling magic realism, the fiklm reveals a community where tradition and ritual are the routes used to cope with, and to cure, deviance.
