The Midwife's Tale
Megan Siler, director.
USA, 1995, 16mm, 75 min.

Framed as a bedtime story, The Midwife's Tale is a refreshing reconstruction of the fairytale genre. Lady Eleanor is a headstrong noblewoman who falls in love with the village midwife. When accusations of witchcraft lead to imprisonment of the midwife, the damsels in distress plot an escape, and with a twist of fairytale fate, the two women live happily ever after. Steeped in romance and fantasy, but also laced with real events in women's history, this film is a lush tapestry of beautiful locations, fine performances and forbidden love.
