Winner of various Best Documentary awards as well as the Best Female Director at the last Inside Out in Toronto, My Left Breast is according to Rosie O'Donnell "an honest, heartwarming tale of a charming, witty and wonderful woman's outlook on life, love and breast cancer."
With startling honesty and immediacy, Newfoundland filmmaker Gerry Rogers began filming her ordeal with breast cancer the moment her hair started falling out from chemotherapy. Gerry holds nothing back as she documents the pain, fear and hope that she feels during her battle. She takes us on a journey that begins in the hospital and records her chemotherapy and radiation treatments and the side-effects that follow.
As her hair falls out, she jokes about how she resembles her bald baby nephew. Rather than letting it get her down, she organizes a potluck healing-wig where everyone is invited to drop by and donate a lock of hair. Gerry's struggle is a testament to what the human spirit can do when faced with great adversity. She opens up her body, heart and soul to the camera and invites everyone to take a look at how love and humour helped her in the greatest fight of her life.
