Party Monster
Fenton Bailey & Bandy Barbato, directors.
USA, 1997, video, 57 min.

Party Monster recounts the story of real-life clubmeister Michael Alig's rapid rise and dramatic fall. A brash young wannabe-hipster from the backwaters of small town America, Alig established himself as the #1 party promoter in New York during the mid-80s and became a leader of the so-called Club Kids.

Kids were infamous for their outrageous looks and flamboyant behaviour and their constant quest for newer, more intense highs. Trapped in an out-of-control spiral of drugs and violence, Alig murdered his roommate Angle Melendez with a hammer to the head and Drano down his throat.

Through astounding video footage and amazing candid interviews, directors Bailey and Barbato have created a luridly stylish and chilling account of the drug-fueled hedonistic abandon that transformed a young man into a remorseless monster.
