More potent than a Prozac martini and cheaper than therapy, Sex, Politics & Cocktails is a gay “Sex and the City” mixed with a liberal shot of “Queer As Folk”. The result is a sweet, but not saccharine, tale of finding yourself and love where you least expect it.
Sebastian is a starving filmmaker, new to Los Angeles, who lands himself a job as a documentary filmmaker telling the larger-than-life stories of gay relationships. Feeling ill-prepared, the single, gorgeous and supposedly straight Sebastian turns for advice to his friend Daria, a soap opera actress with a closet-full of West Hollywood clichés as friends. For instance there's Michael, whose longest relationship is with an Armani suit, and Paulie, a pot- smoking proctologist into monogamy. Together these thirsty, thirty-something soulmates are the toastmasters to “future ex-husbands.”
Sebastian finds himself being slowly nudged - with the help of tequila - into LA's glittery gay scene. A nudge however is all he needs and soon he is questioning his sexual orientation while exploring the uncharted waters of gay politics and sexual innuendo.
Writer, director, and star Hernandez carries the film with a charming honesty and heart-felt optimism that leaves audiences believing that out there is that special someone to spoon with all night - and who will serve you a continental breakfast in the morning.
