Tipping The Velvet, based on the fabulous book by Sarah Waters, is a fun-filled three hour BBC production that charts the adventurous life of Nan Astley in Victorian England. Sexually daring, well-written, and wonderfully acted, this is a must-see for anyone who likes their guilty pleasures.
Enter the underground world of fin-de-siècle London: a world of romance, male impersonators, cabaret singers, and powerful society women who keep sex slaves at their beck and call. Follow Nan, an oyster girl from a seaside town, as she falls in love with Kitty, a male-impersonator music-hall star, moves to the big city, gets dumped, takes a turn as a rent boy and ends up becoming a "kept woman" to a high society vixen.
The topsy-turvy plot twists and campy sensibility are what make this story so much fun. Tipping the Velvet shows you a side of Victorian England you've never seen on screen before.
