"Everything that Showgirls tried but gloriously failed to be is in Wild Side. The lesbian sleeper of 1995, [a] torrid lesbian love story packaged in the guise of a standard straight-to-video soft-core action/thriller" - Images in the Dark, 380.
Previously released in a version not approved by Donald Cammell (Performance, Demon Seed), Wild Side has been painstakingly restored to reflect the late directors wishes. Alex Lee (Anne Heche) is a banker by day and a high-class hooker by night. Both of her careers are sent in a tailspin after a $1,500 tryst with Bruno (Christopher Walken in an intense performance), a high-living businessman with criminal intentions.
When Bruno's wife Virginia (an elegant and gorgeous Joan Chen) and Alex meet, the two women begin a torrid affair. Before she realizes it, Alex is soon caught up in a plot to inject a computer virus into the national banking system, a pawn in the hands of a sex-crazed FBI man (Steven Bauer) and with Virginia, in love for the first time.
The cast is excellent, the story contains two wonderfully developed lesbian characters, the sex scenes between Heche and Chen are electric, Ryuchi Sakamoto's original score is a knockout and its intense and gripping plot make Wild Side a very tasty mystery thriller and not to be missed.
